Jay Dunkirk is assigned a homicide case in Swank, Kentucky, that was reported at the home of Rosalie Rodante, where the co-manager of a butcher shop has been stabbed multiple times in the back.

Despite there being no murder weapon at the crime scene and no eyewitnesses, Dunkirk proceeds forward with his investigation and starts to suspect that one of Rodante's relatives committed the crime. Which one, though, is the question.

Dunkirk also starts investigating a cold case involving the late grandson of one of his colleagues. Could that man's death and the Rodante case be connected? With a small town's attention on him, Dunkirk soon finds himself in a web of lies.
