Description
The long awaited Book 5 in the Plains series
Featuring Black Mountain men Nate Grisham and Cotton Top.
After barely surviving a harrowing flash flood, Nate and Cotton have lost not only their season's haul of beaver pelts but their friend and fellow trapper, Cornbread. Demoralized and in need of a safe place to recover, they head to the familiar comforts of Butterfield's Trading Post. There Nate and Cotton will mourn their friend, and plan their next move.
The loss of the season's pelts weighs heavy on Nate. In an effort to make ends meet, he signs up as a scout with the U.S. Army. With luck he figures he can earn enough to start over fresh in the next season. However, the Commander at Fort Atkinson has a special task in mind for Nate... returning three young captives and a chief's daughter back to the Sioux. Since Nate knows the chief, Buffalo Hump, he is the right man for the job. However, the Pawnee are on the war trail and they stand between Nate and his objective of the Sioux camp. Nate knows the rival Pawnee will use every trick they know to block the mission from being successful, intending to escalate tensions between the Sioux and the US Army.
Although Nate might be the best hope for leading this job, this time he just might have bitten off more than he can chew. It's going to be a long road and by the end, even Nate is going to be taken aback by the journey's hardships and stunning revelations.
In typical W.R. Benton fashion, the wild action and shocking twists will keep you turning pages all night.
