Description

I was a foot soldier in the most hated and feared agency in the United States the IRS. To be specific, I was a tax collector, officially known as the revenue officer. For fifteen years I practically harassed delinquent taxpayers as authorized by the US government. I knocked on their doors, demanded payments and tax returns, threatened them with liens and levies, and seized their property. I thought that, without a doubt, I was doing good and serving the country.

One of my taxpayers committed suicide in front of me and I was lucky to walk away alive. Left with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and I was scarred. While suffering from extreme anxiety and muscular pain, I persevered and continued on to be one of the best investigators for the IRS, as per my direct managers. I found hidden assets, assets placed beyond the reach of the government, filed nominee and alter-ego liens, prepared lawsuits, and even sent people to jail. I did that despite my fears, bad management and poor support system. Until one day I couldn't do it anymore.

In this book, I describe some of the most interesting and challenging cases I encountered while in the service. Although I saw many taxpayers successfully cheat the system, some didn't get so lucky. The IRS is a slow giant, overburdened by many of its own rules and regulations, which lacks a skilled and motivated workforce. They go hard on the easy targets, such as the W-2 employees, and those who could be easily levied and seized. When it comes to the shrewder ones, they often do nothing.

As a trained internal auditor, I could easily identify many of the inefficiencies of the IRS's bureaucracy. The waste of time and resources was too painful to watch. The IRS is an example of the many government agencies that continue to grow and expand, like most bureaucracies tend to do, if there is no outside force there to stop them. They require more and more resources as the span of their oversight expands. All of the needed resources have to come from us, the taxpayers.

One day, an elderly taxpayer asked me, how come we were going after him while big shots like Donald Trump paid little to no taxes? I had no answer to that, but it dawned on me that something was very wrong in the system. A little research further showed some of the big and well-known companies also paid no tax. In the meantime, the IRS was pounding the everyday Joe with a combined rate of nearly fifty percent between penalties and interest, which rarely gets abated, on top of the tax owed. Something is wrong; the system is rigged.

Working with the public on a daily basis, I witnessed the regular people getting increasingly stressed and depressed. They don't know how to handle the realities of everyday life. You can also see it on the daily news in the crime reports. The level of violence is hitting unprecedented levels. According to my own doctor, anti-depressants should be served in drinking water to everyone. And it's not only the taxes that are the problem, but, amongst others, it's the loss of freedoms, disillusionment with the government, and loss of faith and hope.

I have been representing taxpayers in front of the IRS after my ugly divorce from the agency. They've been getting harder and harder on the taxpayers. You can tell they are getting desperate for money -- they need it. So, they are willing to squeeze every last cent from the taxpayers. No wonder they recently hired thousands and thousands of new auditors and collectors. Let's face it: it costs a lot of money to fight actual and proxy wars and feed the military industrial complex. Someone has to pay up, and apparently, it's us.
