Description

A little girl found friends from the older people in her neighborhood while her mother worked long hours at the hardware store. They were poor and her job offered only enough to provide the small apartment above the store and not much more. Bithia was satisfied with her 'grand-friends,' as she called them.
Spending most of her spare time helping her friends, Bithia was gradually learning how to transition from a little girl to a teen and then to a young lady. They were teaching her life lessons that should have been taught at home. She was naturally a friendly sort and took it upon herself to lift the spirits of a grouchy old man named Mr. Clements. Over time, he introduced her to bees expecting it would discourage her visits, but that didn't happen. She took to the bees like a duck to water and when he had to move in with his son, he left his bees to the girl.
When she was fifteen, almost sixteen, her mother married hoping to improve her station in life expecting Bithia to pack their apartment while she and her new husband were on their wedding trip. Several weeks later, her mother returned and found Bithia away from the apartment. She left a note with a little money, enough to rent the apartment for another month, telling her that she was old enough to take care of herself. Have a good life.
Bithia needed a horse and wagon to transport everything from the apartment, except the furniture, and her bee hives and equipment. Going to several livery stables looking for a horse, she overheard someone talk about her mother leaving her and if she went to her friends, they could be charged with abduction.
For the past few years, her bees provided honey she traded for better equipment and supplies they needed in the apartment. If she could find a place to set up the hives and provide shelter for herself, she was sure she would be able to get along well enough.
