Description
A painting of freedom. A painting of possibility. A painting of hope.
I do not know who should receive them.
I will let fate decide.
Lilian Farrier is an artist. Yet as an uneducated, unmarried woman living in Victorian England, she doubts that she would ever be taken seriously by the art world. Crafting her masterpieces in the secrecy of her father's tiny attic, her brother Edmund is the only one who knows of her talent. It is when Lilian's circumstances change and she faces the stark reality of going into service that she and Edmund hatch a plan: to sell her paintings in his name.
Lilian's story intertwines with those of the three women whose lives are tied to her legacy: Eva, falsely accused of adultery in the 1930s by her philandering husband; Anna, an unmarried mother ostracised by her family in the 1960s; and Katya, an ambitious over-achiever in the 2020s who begins to question the purpose of her corporate success. The tiny, remote Hawthorn Cottage, nestled in the rolling landscape of the Derbyshire Dales, holds treasures for each of them.
The women's four interconnected stories explore their challenges, dreams and triumphs. Each is thwarted by the social expectations imposed upon them, yet each ultimately finds a way to thrive, thanks to the sanctuary of Hawthorn Cottage and to one woman's far-reaching artistic legacy.
