Description

Set in the late 1800s Dakotas
Found wandering the North Dakota lands as a toddler, Many Coups, was raised a Sioux brave. Reaching manhood, his Sioux people come to value his command of English as a valuable commodity. But the discovery of gold in the sacred land of the Black Hills creates fresh and bitter conflict. Many Coups has a chance of achieving an agreement with the U.S. Army, a task he is willing to face if it can aid his adopted family, but it will not be easy. And it's a job that requires skills well beyond the new brave's meager years.

The tribe has already faced years of mistreatment and don't expect the new influx of settlers and gold miners to integrate smoothly into the tribe's lifestyle, but even the knowledgeable elders couldn't fathom the harsh realities to come. The Army's treachery and lies soon lead to the brink of war. Soon Many Coups and the Sioux people come to realize the battle was doomed from the start.

It becomes apparent the Army never intended to honor their agreements. Not when a rich gold strike is waiting just out of their reach. For his role in the dispute, Many Coups is branded a wanted man with a price on his head. The Army and the U.S. government will stop at nothing to see him captured and destroyed as an example. Hoping to stave off more threats against his tribe, Many Coups makes a run for it.

Since the young man can pass as white, he aligns himself with other whites in an attempt to go unnoticed in the sparsely populated territory. After a nasty dust-up with some disreputable buffalo skinners the teen learns the hard way he needs more then just his pale skin to understand the ways of these settlers.

Befriended by a Federal deputy, Many Coups agrees to help the man execute an arrest warrant on a corrupt Army General -- unknown to him the General is the very man who put a price on his head!
