About This Book (Oliver Octopus and the Unwinnable Game)
Building empathy by understanding equity vs equality

"Life's not fair!" Young or old, many people have felt that way. But who's to say what's fair? And is fair in one situation always fair in others? Join Oliver Octopus and Sue Stingray as they use two different types of fairness, Equity and Equality, to understand why Sue's cavefish friends won't play darts with her anymore even though they are all playing by the same rules.

Why EQUITY VS. EQUALITY is Critical for Kids and Adults

By age 4, many children intrinsically understand fairness only as "equal distribution" (Blake, 2017). But equal opportunity (equity) is often more fair and usually results in "more equal societies" that "do better in health, education, and nutrition" (Vandemoortele, 2012).

It's also critical to developing empathy and compassion (Nakkula and Toshalis, 2006) which leads to better emotional regulation and language skills (Ornaghi, Conte, Grazzani, 2022).

About Younger Me Academy

Younger Me Academy was carefully designed by a Google strategist to be the "perfect children's picture book for the growth-oriented family."

Referred to by reviewers as "TED Talks in Storybook Form," each book uses a rhyming adventure story to introduce research-backed, life-long skills chosen for their importance in child AND adult development. They are inspired by global thought leaders like:

• Carol Dweck, Stanford University professor and author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

• Adam Grant, University of Pennsylvania professor and #1 New York Times Bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals

• Daniel Kahneman, Nobel Prize winner in economics and author of Thinking Fast and Slow

... and more

The creation of the books was as scientifically rigorous as the research themes they are based on; hundreds of test readers were engaged in structured and unstructured testing over every decision, from the illustrators (100+ considered), to the rhyme structure, to the manuscripts (200+ drafts), book size, etc.

Recommended Ages

Younger Me Academy books are designed as read-along books for the whole family ages 0+ (~5-6+ for independent reading). They use the latest research in children's literature to ensure that readers...

• Ages 0-2 will delight in the colorful illustrations, lovable characters, and rhythmic experience designed to support language & memory development

• Ages 2-5 will relate to the characters and begin to learn basic concepts that they can apply in simple ways, with encouragement from parents

• Ages 5-8+ can begin to independently read the lively stories and enjoy having thoughtful discussions with parents about applying the skills

• Parents will learn concepts that they might otherwise seek out through TED talks or nonfiction, and enjoy the 3-5 minute rhyming read-aloud experience
