Description

The much-anticipated origin story of Nate Grisham
Deep in the heart of Mississippi, Nate was born into slavery. Even as a child, the intelligent and compassionate Nate understood his fate. He would live and die by the harsh conditions of his plantation existence.

While Nate had never known anything different, it didn't stop him from feeling a deep sorrow and anger at the cruel punishment and despicable living conditions every slave endured. Nor could Nate fathom the suffering and brutal physical damage done to those brave but foolish souls who dared to disobey the Master.

When Nate is chosen for a solo errand into the town, he suddenly sees a chance for a better life. It's not often a slave can venture out alone, and even less often that they can be granted a few hours before they will be missed. Nate knew an opportunity like this might not come again, and it presented his best, and perhaps only chance for freedom.

Understanding only that he must head North, Nate really has no other idea of where he should go. In a dangerous journey he eventually reaches the bustling and rough-edged city of St. Louis. There, by chance, he meets two mountain men, Zee and Teacher. The pair are in town to sell their furs and Nate strikes up a conversation with them about their unusual outfits and way of life. After some discussion, they agree to teach Nate how to become a trapper... as they tell him it was probably the only way a young black runaway could slip away and avoid having to work for someone else.

Soon they are on their way to the high mountains in search of beaver, but nothing in Nate's sheltered life has prepared him for what comes next...
This is the story you've been waiting for... from humble origins to a bona fide frontier force to be reckoned with. Saddle up and hold on tight for the newest WR Benton frontier adventure.
