Description
Young Tillie was brought up with a violent father and a subservient mother. She believed that happiness only came through making the right choices, so she had a list of what she wanted in her life and what she definitely wouldn't accept. Her goal was simple, she just wanted to be happy. It all seemed so easy, then she grew up and real life happened.
The choices others made had a domino effect on Tillie's life. She didn't realise that it was her own children who would shatter her dreams and bring such sadness and worry to her door. Tillie soon learned that she didn't have control over her own life after all. Her daughter, Ellen, broke Tillie's heart. Once again she was suffering in silence and trying to keep the peace, as she'd done as a child.
Ellen had her own future planned. No one was going to stand in her way as she climbed up the social ladder. Tillie kept quiet while knowing about Ellen's lying and cheating ways. The guilt she felt on Ellen's wedding day, watching her new son in law being led like a lamb to the slaughter, was overwhelming, yet Tillie still said nothing. Her daughter had become a stranger.
Ellen's story is one of wealth but sadness. The love of Ellen's life was her house, the biggest in the village of course. She hosted the best parties and was ashamed of her own family. She destroyed any love in their home.
Four generations of women in the same family, different personalities, different goals yet each suffering in their own way. Through generations, emotions and challenges of mothers don't change. It seems the child is still linked by a thread of hope and love no matter what.
