Hong Kong, 1990, and British expat Sam Steadings is busy in his first posting after completing 36 weeks of training as a Probationary Inspector at the Royal Hong Kong Police Training School.

Green but keen, Sam's first posting on the mean and unpredictable streets of Kowloon have pushed him to his limits. After developing a reputation as a Jonah around the station, the stresses and strains of dealing with ruthless criminals are not being helped by an exacting Divisional Commander, internal politics, and a messy love life.

This tense thriller, the fourth in the series following The Division, The District and The Team, takes the reader back to the years when Hong Kong authorities were stretched to the limit by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese 'boat people' and it fell to the police to maintain law and order in hostile and violent detention centres.
