Description
The enemy Solcrue are desperate to thwart the CyberTitans' plan to get off of planet Ellipsis and rejoin the lost brothers of Rogue Fleet. If the Titans can be reunited, they might have a strong enough force to return to battle.
Taline
The last escape pods fall from the Solcrue warships in a mad dash for freedom. Solcrue switch from trying to capture our many sisters of servitude to simply shooting them out of the sky. It's a dangerous rescue mission that summons all available women and Titans to the surface of the planet. I'm barely back on my feet, yet I find myself in the middle of the turbulent battle, frantically collecting the last injured humans who dare defy our enemy.
Among the explosions and mayhem is the red-striped medic unit, Rebel, calmly but quickly directing the rescue efforts and tending to the women and Titans in need of help. His confidence inspires hope in many until the ground disintegrates and a cavern swallows those of us who remain.
A unit named Drillbit carves paths of escape for the others before he comes for me and his severely damaged brother, Rebel. When Drillbit overheats trying to bore us a route to safety, I find myself stuck as the caregiver to Rebel without help, and the protector of Drillbit who's disappeared inside a cocoon of metal.
Rebel has fought to save so many, and I feel unprepared for the burden of healing him. My nursing skills are based on human anatomy, not Titan cybertech. When I dig deeper into Rebel's injuries, I discover something I am familiar with--the burden of those I could not save.
His knowledge is vast compared to what he's shared with other Titans in the medbay. He's the only medic unit the rebellion has. We can't lose him. I have to give him a reason to keep fighting.
If only he knew my reason for fighting to stay alive was him.
Rebel
Not once, during all of Taline's treatments, did I see her break or pray for her life to end simply so she could be free of the painful burns. She endured the medicine and the cleaning without complaint. When she was well enough, she disappeared from my watch. That was until the last rescue mission when she appeared on the surface with the evacuation crew just before the ground swallowed us.
It is one thing to carry the responsibility for every Titan and human's health and safety. It is another monster to endure the physical agony of injuries and know that because of them I am unable to help the ones who desperately need it. It is an agonizing burden. In moments of consciousness, I notice Taline dragging me to safety, doing her best to repair me, and then moving me further down the tunnels. Her determination reflects my own, but she brings an element of closeness to my care that's unexpected.
Her affection is foreign. I'm used to being asked to do the impossible for others, to heal and repair what is beyond saving. Until Taline touched me, I'd lost all sense of myself in my care of others. Because of her, my programming fragments. My wild need to break rules consumes me. I can't keep my hands off of her.
After we regroup with other resistance members, Taline is sent on a medical supply run with another team because she knows the supplies well. I must undergo a procedure to be fit for service. When she's captured and forced to care for the enemy, my protocols and damage can't hold me back from going after her.
I don't care what risks I have to take. Rules can burn. Taline has given me the closest thing I can comprehend to feeling alive.
Will Rebel be able to rescue Taline and rejoin the resistance in one piece? Or will a returning traitor get in his way?
