Two countries. Two mothers. One, dealing with complete heartbreak when she is forced to give away her baby; the other, holding that same little one as a long-awaited joy.

When Fen is forced to leave her brand new second baby, Ning, on a local church's steps because of China's One Child Only policy, she has no idea where the tiny girl will end up. Hopefully, with an American couple, but Fen's deepest fear is that Ning could just as easily be drowned in a river.

Meanwhile, across the world in the United States' Nebraska, the adoptive mother, Paula, is filled with happiness. After years of trying to get pregnant, her dream of being a Mommy is finally here.

As the years go by, we learn what happens to both Fen and Paula as they each face the true reality of their situations. Is everyone happy? Will it all work out?
