Eleven-year-old Kala Blaise is next in line to be Kindler, the storyteller in charge of building the world's Imagination. For centuries, Kindlers have done this by replenishing Aeverum - Imagination's flame - while reading stories inside the Holloton Library. As long as that blue fire burns, the world's minds will stay alight.

But Kala Blaise has a problem: Aeverum is shrinking, and no one will listen to her stories. All anyone cares about is TynkerVille, the massive toy factory just built in the center of town.

TynkerVille is no ordinary factory. It's home to the Designer, the shadowy inventor who vanished after releasing his Tynks: gorgeous, mechanical toys that captured the minds of everyone in Holloton.
