Jemma Lucas is your archetypal thirty year old girl about town. She is bold, fearless, oodles of fun and fiercely intelligent. She has a great job in the city doing what she loves, a personal tribe of close knit friends who would do anything for each other, and a social life that others would give their Jimmy Choos for. She can quaff a bottle of Cava in less time than it takes to boil a kettle, and is not afraid to consume her weight in cinnamon buns. She is a girl for all girls. Nothing phases her. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. Except for her new boss Jake.
With a body akin to that of Michelangelo's David and a personality equally as impressive, Jake Bales has it all. He's the full package. He commands his office like a well-honed, apex predator, maintaining perfectly coiffed waves whilst he secures multi-million pound contracts. Men want to be him and women want to be with him. He is confident, charismatic, funny and he knows it. In his presence, Jemma falls apart. Coherent sentences become a struggle, maintaining eye contact is virtually impossible, even staying upright is harder than it sounds. Why can she not be that go get 'em, eloquent force of nature that she usually is around him?
When an unfortunate workplace incident forces them to get more acquainted, Jemma starts to see beyond Jake's shiny exterior. Yes, he is still mouth-wateringly beautiful, but she discovers that there is more to him than chiselled abs and a peachy derriere. He is human. Everyone is fighting a hidden battle, and Jake is no different, and the more she learns about him, the more she likes him. What she does not expect, is to fall in love with him.
A fairy tale week, culminating in a romantic trip to Paris, has Jemma daring to dream what a life with Jake could be like. But with any fairy tale, things are never straight forward, and the little nagging voice that has been pestering her all week, telling her this is all too good to be true refuses to be silenced.
Once home, an unexpected tragedy throws her world into disarray. When the life of a loved one hangs in the balance, she is forced to make a choice. A choice she never thought she would be faced with. When push comes to shove, can she walk away from the man who has turned her world upside down in such a short space of time, or will she turn her back on the one person who has always stood beside her? She cannot keep both, so which one will it be?
