Description
Another trapping season has ended. After selling their furs in St. Louis, Nate and Cotton are enjoying a well-earned, strong drink when a wild-eyed madman accosts them. During the fight the man spills his dark tale, and if he is to be believed, Nate is a cold-blooded murderer.
While Cotton and Nate are confident of Nate's innocence, having never crossed paths with the belligerent man's brother, let alone killed him, nothing will dissuade him. Nate deals with the hot-head harshly -- he also lets him live... a mistake Nate will come regret.
Later on the trail, Nate and Cotton befriend a Black family with an injured child. Jeff Cody is a trained accountant and free man from back east, aiming to restart a new life on the western frontier, but he and his young family are ill prepared to survive the danger that lies ahead.
After giving aid to the child, Nate and Cotton agree to help them find their way safely to the town of Freedom, a settlement near Butterfield's Trading Post. However their journey will be a deadly one -- only they don't know just how dangerous it will be yet.
The very newest of the acclaimed "Nate Grisham Tales" books by WR Benton.
