Another trapping season has ended. After selling their furs in St. Louis, Nate and Cotton are enjoying a well-earned, strong drink when a wild-eyed madman accosts them. During the fight the man spills his dark tale, and if he is to be believed, Nate is a cold-blooded murderer.

While Cotton and Nate are confident of Nate's innocence, having never crossed paths with the belligerent man's brother, let alone killed him, nothing will dissuade him. Nate deals with the hot-head harshly -- he also lets him live... a mistake Nate will come regret.
