Description
Young Maggie's life may be humble, but it is filled with love and warmth from her hardworking mother. They make do in a tiny, sparse flat, while her mother toils in the kitchen of an opulent home. Maggie is a good girl and obediently stays behind each day while her mother works. But just before Christmas, her world turns upside down -- her mother doesn't return home. The next morning, the cook's helper arrives with heartbreaking news: Maggie's mother has been accused of theft and taken away, a grave injustice to protect the eldest son of the house.
Alone and bewildered, Maggie is brought to work as a kitchen washer, given a tiny nook for sleeping. Over time, she finds a friend in the youngest son of the family, a boy her age, who delights in their secret meetings and shared whispers. As the years pass, Maggie rises within the household, yet her friendship with William remains hidden from his family.
Maggie is thankful, surrounded by her newfound "family" in the kitchen, and she finds warmth and comfort, although dreaming of a life free from secrecy.
When the young man's betrothal is arranged, whispers reach his brother, who plots to rid the family of Maggie's presence.
It appears that all hope is lost, and Maggie steels herself to follow in her mother's footsteps.
Is it possible that her young friend will defy convention to protect her and declare his love?
This Christmas, Maggie's dreams may finally come true -- a happiness richer than she ever imagined.
