Description
Egypt, 1276 BC, and the new pharaoh Ramesses II aims to eclipse the glory of his predecessors and conquer all of Canaan -- even if it means provoking war with the powerful Hittite empire.
Hetep, newly recruited to Egypt's elite chariot corps, is eager to prove himself in battle under the pharaoh's eye and help bring Egyptian order to a chaotic world. But an encounter with a corrupt senior officer named Baya shatters his idealism and sees him demoted to the rank of scribe.
His attempts to gain reinstatement see him caught in an increasingly deadly feud with Baya, which takes him from the intrigue-filled court of a treacherous Syrian king to the hostile deserts of Libya and finally to Kadesh, where history's greatest chariot battle is destined to be fought.
"Hetep's growth through the many plot threads that challenge his perspectives is engaging. Moments of charioteering and setting details are entrancing, with the prose bringing these chapters to life with cinematic flair. An entertaining read." -- Historical Novel Society Review.
