Harry Blood kills several men while he's robbing the bank in Pecos, Nevada, and hightails it northwest toward California. Bounty hunter Rusty Rhodes happens to ride into Pecos, on his way home to Arizona, shortly after the crime, and when he learns that there's a thousand-dollar bounty on Blood, he decides to postpone going home and he gets on the outlaw's trail.

During the chase, Rusty has to contend with unfriendly terrain and unfriendly people, obstacles to his goal of catching the fugitive, but he refuses to give up. Rusty chases the fugitive all the way to Marysville, California, a town in the center of the old gold rush, which has challenges unlike any he's ever faced before.

For the first time since he became a bounty hunter, Rusty wonders if he will be able to complete the job, or if he's finally reached the end of his trail.
