In the Montmartre district, Christopher-Georges, 11, tries not to dwell on the fact that he won't be going to the same school as his childhood friends. What matters to him is to make it through the year in this strange school and to make friends.

When Christopher-Georges discovers that some students are mysteriously falling into comas, his hopes to have finally found a safe place are shattered. He understands that he never stood a chance in this dangerous society. I like the three main characters of Miss Gifty's school, and I like that it is not so Harry-Potterish. CG is not the "chosen one" or at least, not yet. He is pursued by evil, as is required by all fantasy, and particularly middle grade protagonists.
