Something happened at the Grange. Jack Harvey can't remember.

He was eight years old when he was sent to the Grange, a house by the sea. It was 1916, and a great battle was about to take place. There, he meets a boy, Nathan, a younger girl, Pandora, and the old fisherman, Grimmer. There, he learns about the wreck of the Polymnia, whose bell rings from twenty fathoms deep. There, he learns about the fog.

Thirty years later, after another war has passed, Jack returns to the Grange, a place he'd only been to once. As the fog comes in, he hears the bell ring and remembers.
