Little Women (or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy) is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott published on September 30, 1868, which tells the story of four girls who, after spending their adolescence against the backdrop of the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865, become women. It is based on the author's experiences during her childhood in the city of Concord, Massachusetts. 1

The novel was published without any indication of a previously planned sequel, although in the last paragraph of the novel the author writes:

Thus grouped, the curtain falls on Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Whether or not it will be raised again will depend on the reception given by the public to the first act of the domestic drama entitled Little Women. 2

And it was the case that due to the success generated and the requests of various readers, in 1869 Alcott raised the curtain again with the publication of Good Wives, which takes place four years after Little Women and shows the difficulties that the protagonists face during their adult lives. Both books constitute what was published in Europe as a single volume. Alcott's next works: Little Men (Little Men) and Jo's Boys (Jo's Boys), are continuations of those two novels, showing the sons, nephews and students of the Little Women building their lives.
