Description
The story follows the life of Elnora Comstock, a young girl who lives near the Limberlost Swamp with her widowed mother, Kate. Elnora is determined to attend high school despite financial challenges and the difficulties of her rural upbringing. She is passionate about nature and collects and studies moths to help fund her education.
As Elnora navigates the challenges of school and personal growth, she also becomes entangled in the lives of several other characters:
Mrs. Comstock: Elnora's mother, who is often distant and cold towards her daughter. She has her own history and secrets that impact her relationship with Elnora.
Philip Ammon: A wealthy young man who becomes Elnora's friend and supporter. He helps her with her studies and encourages her love for nature.
Edith Carr: A sophisticated and wealthy woman who initially befriends Elnora, but later becomes a source of conflict due to her romantic interest in Philip.
