Romeo Raymond has just moved back to Brooklyn, New York from Decatur, Georgia to get a fresh start on life. He's renting a spacious two-bedroom apartment in Bed-Stuy and owns a gym near Atlantic Mall. While jogging on the Brooklyn Bridge early one morning, he collides with another jogger - Jane Salgado. He worries about her at first, but after she assures him that she's fine, he invites her to check out his gym. Romeo finds Jane attractive, but has vowed to not date anyone for a year as he's currently finalizing his divorce from his ex-wife.

Jane, on the other hand, finds Romeo attractive and finds his southern charm refreshing. She's never been coy about showing her feelings and quickly falls for Romeo. When he asks her to be his girlfriend, she's over the moon, but she can't ignore the feeling that he's hiding something from her. She doesn't rush him; however, believing that he'll share whatever he's hiding when the time is right. But when an unexpected guest ruins their romantic evening on Valentine's Day, Jane finds herself leaving Romeo's apartment heartbroken.
