Description
Maverick Surrey cricketer, Johnny Lorrens, starts the 1997 season hopeful of regaining his place in the national team. With his journalist wife Elisa away covering the debut US tour of English shock-rock outfit Toadlust, Johnny gets a call from a former teammate and finds himself drawn into a chain of events that quickly spirals out of control. Can he stay focused and fight his way back into the England team to face the Australians? Can he and Elisa survive the season? The action starts at the beginning of the 1997 season with Lorrens recovering from injury and hoping to banish the memories of his only England tour to date - the 1994/5 tour of Australia. Sent home in disgrace after a gambling scandal that he was not actually involved in he is now happily married to Elisa, a music writer on a lads' mag. She is soon sent out to the States to cover the debut tour of English shock-rockers, Toadlust, and her long absences and rumours of marriage problems beset Lorrens as the season gets underway. When he receives a call from his old Surrey teammate, Mark Summers, with a money-making scheme, Lorrens is concerned. As he gets drawn further into his old friend's plans his own life starts to unravel. And then he gets the call. By this time Lorrens is haunted by the mystery surrounding the sudden death of a colleague, is concerned about the apparent irregularities in the ground redevelopment plans at The Oval and is distracted by a mystery blonde. When the one-day series starts in late May, Lorrens finds that the old enemy, the Australians, are not his only ones.
