Description

Lady Serena Brockworth, darling of the ton has a secret. Actually she has several secrets, but it is her involvement in secretly producing a Lady's Magazine, 'La Dernier Cri', which has the potential to get her into serious trouble if her partcipation in its production is ever revealed. She and her friends, Millie and Fliss, started the magazine as an experiment to see if they could raise sufficient funds to keep their favoured charity ; Lady Mary's School for Girls, running, after its founder, Lady Mary unexpectedly died. Their involvement also helps to relieve the boredom of their fourth year of being on the Marriage Mart. All three ladies are holding out for love matches, though it is worryingly obvious that as the years pass, the chances of achieving this goal are dwindling rapidly.
Hew d'Arras, ninth Earl of Blencathra, has reluctantly returned to England from India, where he has more than achieved his ambition to make a fortune for himself. He had sworn never to return to England, after being hurt and humiliated by the woman whom he had thought he loved. The beautiful blue-eyed blonde, Elspeth, who, though swearing that she loved Hew, had married his brother Jasper. And all because she wanted to be a Countess. So Hew had left to make his fortune and erected strong defences around his heart, so the likes of Elspeth (now deceased) and her ilk would never be able to treat him with such disdain, ever again..
Returning to London, Hew looks up his one remaining close blood relative, Isabel, who is newly married to Theo Brockworth, Marquess of Norcombe, Serena's brother. When Serena and Hew meet, Hew feels an instant physical attraction to her - she is after all a stunning beautiful, blue-eyed bonde. So he immediately puts up his granite-like defences, showing not attraction but what looks suspiciously like cold dislike. Mystified and not a little annoyed that Isabel's cousin seems to have taken her in instant abhorrence, for no obvious reason, Serena decides to pay him back by insisting in helping to choose Hew's new house, when her advice is enlisted by Isabel, despite the fact that Hew tries everything short of downright rudeness, to put her off.
Soon, against his better judgement, Hew has to admit that Serena has some interesting ideas and eventually resigns himself to the fact that he is intrigued by her, as she does not quite fit in with all the negative expectations he has of ladies of her class and attributes.
And so starts the on-off, up and down relationship between the stoic, reticent Hew, and the warm sociable, Serena, as their friends and relatives watch on, fascinated, slightly amused, and sometimes downright worried.
Can Hew overcome his prejudices - does he even want to? Will Serena be trapped into an unwanted marriage by a fortune hunter, whose dark reputation, forged in India, is already known by Hew? Will scandal sink Serena and her family's standing in Society? Will they realise that whilst their differences are complimentary, it is their similarities that make them soul-mates?For a good old-fashioned love story set in the late Georgian period, enjoy this second book in The Brockworth Chronicles series.
