Big Jim Barber was a hired gun of great repute, till an unfortunate incident caused him to lose his nerve and hang up his six-iron for good.

Years later, when Big Jim's former hometown falls prey to a gang of cutthroats, he is persuaded to pick up his gun again and come to the town's aid. The only problem is, at his advancing age, Jim isn't sure he still has what it takes to put the bad men down.

Fortunately, Jim has some help this time... from an upstart wannabe gunslinger named Emil Garrett. Young Emil -- still more an adolescent than a man -- has his own ax to grind with the gang of hellions that has taken over Peabody, Kansas. Someone in the gang slaughtered Emil Garrett's older brothers, and he aims to find the men who did it. He intends to make them pay with their own blood.

Emil is a good with a gun, Big Jim quickly learns -- but is the youngster good enough? Will Jim and Emil be able to save Peabody from its plight, or will the aging gunman and the wannabe also fall victim to the gang of ruthless mankillers?
