Late one spring afternoon, only a couple hours before sundown, James walked from the corral and stopped dead still. Sitting right there on a paint pony was what looked to be a teen-aged Indian boy.
James didn't know what to do when the boy asked, "Is this the ranch of U.S. Marshal Shorty Thompson?"
"It is. What do you want with him?"
"I have a message from another white man."
"You can give it to me. I'll see he gets it."
"No, a man gave me twenty dollars saying to give only to the marshal."
"Twenty dollars! You wait right here. I'll get Uncle Shorty. That must be important."
Three minutes later, Shorty was reading that message. "Marshal, I am holding Commander Overton and I'll give you five days to meet me at the Red Rock Station. You don't show up within five days, on the sixth I'll kill him and me and the boys, seven of us, will visit your ranch and not one person will live through it."
