Description
Clara Whitcomb stood on the makeshift platform; her gloved hands were trembling beneath the lace. The dusty saloon had been cleared for the occasion, its usual clientele replaced by ranchers, miners, and men with eyes like flint. She had signed up for the mail order bride auction out of sheer desperation, not daring to hope for love or kindness... only survival.
The bidding began!
"Twenty dollars," someone called.
"Thirty."
"Fifty."
A hush fell when a voice rasped from the back... low and deliberate. "One hundred!"
Heads turned... and there he was, Patch! The one-eyed gunman leaned against the wall, his wide-brimmed hat shadowing half his face. The other half bore the mark of a man who'd seen too much and survived too long. The glint of his revolver sparkled in the room as Patch waited for any of the other men to challenge his bid.
Clara's breath caught when she saw Patch. She'd heard the stories about him. There was a rumor he'd shot a man for whistling off-key. And now he was the highest bidder! What would he do to her?
