Description
A tell-all, open letter to the entertainment industry, from the frontlines of British theatre.
Linda John-Pierre has spent decades as a professional performer, singing, acting and trying to dance her way through West End stages, UK tours, and screen productions. She's worked with A-list celebrities, and lived her absolute best life doing what she was born to do.
She's also been screamed at in dressing rooms. Asked, several times, if she's done The Lion King (she hasn't). Been told "all the Black people are getting my jobs". Heard someone casually reference the Klu Klux Klan in rehearsal while everyone pretended not to notice. Been asked, "Can you not be so good at what you do?"
This book is what happens when a Black actress finally stops staying silent.
With unflinching honesty, unexpected wit, and hard-won grace, Linda pulls back the curtain on an industry that prides itself on being progressive while still asking performers of colour: "Can you do a Caribbean accent? We can't have a Black actor speaking better than a white one."
From magical collaborations with directors who actually researched who she was before hiring her, to toxic productions that nearly cost her everything, including her life, this is the full story. The joy and the trauma. The standing ovations and the suicidal thoughts. The moments that made her want to quit, and the ones that reminded her why she stayed.
This isn't just Linda's story. It's the voice for everyone who's experienced racism, bullying, and discrimination in the entertainment industry but been too afraid to speak up. Too worried about never working again. Too exhausted from fighting just to be treated like a human being.
Linda John-Pierre is done being silent. And she's calling the industry out, with receipts, with grace, and with a challenge:
Does that still happen?
Yes. It does.
Until we demand real change.
The bravest thing I've ever written. And I'm only sorry I didn't write it sooner.
