Description
When a country squire is found dead upon his own land, crushed beneath cattle, the verdict of accident is swiftly reached and just as swiftly accepted by the local authorities. Such deaths, they say, are unfortunate -- but not unknown.
His widow is not convinced.
Summoned to a large estate in West Sussex, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are drawn into a case where motive is plain, resentment is widespread, and yet no evidence of murder can be found. The scene of death offers nothing to contradict the official conclusion, and even Holmes finds himself faced with a mystery that resists every conventional line of inquiry.
As the days pass and the case threatens to slip beyond his grasp, an apparently unrelated incident sets Holmes upon a new train of thought -- one that will lead him back to the field where the man died, and to a truth more unsettling than anyone had imagined.
Quiet, atmospheric, and rooted in close observation, Sherlock Holmes and the Squire is a tale of patience, perception, and the dangerous consequences of underestimating the ordinary.
