Description
A celebrated novelist has vanished from public life.
He no longer receives visitors, has dismissed his servants, and refuses all correspondence. He lives alone in his large, shuttered house in Norwood.
Alarmed by his silence and erratic behaviour, his publishers turn to Sherlock Holmes for help.
At first, Holmes refuses to involve himself in what appears to be a private withdrawal rather than a crime.
But when the author insists upon seeing Holmes -- and Holmes alone -- he agrees to act.
