Description
THE DARKEST NIGHT
By Gervase Willis
Some children hurt so loudly, the world can't help but notice.
Others just fade between the cracks, breaking quietly.
Sigil is one of the invisible ones -- small, silent, holding on in a decaying house where cruelty is normal and neglect is hidden in plain view. When hunger, abuse, and abandonment finally overtake her, most people assume that's the end of her story.
They're mistaken.
She awakens inside a shattered porcelain doll, gazing through a single red eye. Now she's caught in the Entropic Veil -- a strange, liminal place where pain lingers and nothing is forgotten. Here, Sigil becomes something different and unsettling: a witness who never looks away, a guardian who brings justice without letting bitterness take root.
She doesn't seek revenge. She's cautious, moving quietly through forgotten places where children suffer unseen -- places where love is just for show, where neglect wounds more deeply than any bruise, and silence is the sharpest blade. Those who harm or ignore children are made to confront what they've done. The ones with any remorse get a fragile chance at redemption.
The farther Sigil travels, the more her presence spreads. Old, uneasy forces within the Veil begin to stir -- not because of her strength, but because of her compassion. She finds allies in unexpected forms. And little by little, the balance between memory, consequence, and protection begins to shift.
