Richard Marsh (1857-1915), l'un des titans du thriller victorien, publia quatre-vingts livres en vingt ans de carrière, dont "Le Scarabée" (1897) reste le plus durable. Mais on lui doit aussi une des femmes-détectives les plus originales, Judith Lee, ainsi que des romans et des contes, fantastiques ou policiers, qui "possèdent entre autres qualités celle de n'avoir pas pris une ride" (Richard D. Nolane).
